Serena Williams receives unexpected singles wildcard at 44 for Wimbledon

Serena Williams is coming back to compete in tennis after taking years off.

Serena Williams Returns to Wimbledon

Serena Williams made a surprising announcement on Sunday, accepting a wild card to compete at Wimbledon at the age of 44. This move took many in the tennis community by surprise.

Williams secured the last available spot in the women’s singles after a pre-announcement on Tuesday. Earlier this month, she had received a wild card to team up with her sister, Venus, for the doubles tournament, but she also hinted at the possibility of returning to singles play.

When asked if she felt ready for singles again, Serena noted, “I have to work,” during her time at the Wimbledon grounds.

Throughout her illustrious career, Serena has won the Wimbledon women’s singles title seven times. Yet, the record of 24 Grand Slam titles held by Margaret Court still drives her onward. It’s interesting to note that Serena’s career has spanned just 23 years.

Her last singles victory was in 2019 against Romania’s Simona Halep at Wimbledon, and since making a comeback after a four-year hiatus, she has participated in only two doubles matches.

Serena’s remarkable achievements include winning each Grand Slam at least three times, proving her dominance in the sport. Alongside her sister, she also accomplished the career “Golden Slam” in both singles and doubles.

As perhaps the most recognized female athlete in tennis, fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting her journey in this year’s tournament. In 2022, she expressed uncertainty about whether this would be her final Wimbledon appearance, stating, “Who knows where I’ll show up?”

She has always thrived on grass courts, boasting an impressive record of 107 wins out of 123 matches on grass, which could bode well for her return.

The tournament is set to begin on June 29, and Serena will find out her first-round opponent this Friday.
