Chinese Graduate Student Sentenced in Serial Rape Case
A Chinese graduate student has been sentenced to prison after his conviction for drugging and raping ten women in both the UK and China. This ruling came from a London court on Thursday, with police indicating that he may have attempted to target over 50 additional victims.
Zhenhao Zou, 28, was labeled in court as “calculating and predatory.” It was revealed that he recorded nine of his assaults using hidden or handheld cameras, yet only two of the ten victims have been identified.
Judge Rosina Cottage, presiding over the case at London Crown Court, noted the “devastating and long-term effect” of Zou’s actions, describing them as a “planned and carried out rape campaign.” She mentioned that while he appeared outwardly ambitious and charming, these traits masked a dangerous predator.
Zou treated his victims “mercilessly,” seeing them as mere “sexual toys,” driven by a need to exert power over women—a clear indication that he poses an ongoing risk, she stated.
During the sentencing, Zou, dressed in a dark suit and glasses, listened with apparent disbelief through a translator. He has been sentenced to a minimum of 22 years, accounting for time already served.
The former engineering student at University College London was convicted in March of 28 offenses, which included raping three women in London and seven in China between 2019 and 2023. He also faced charges related to possessing a solvent used to commit sexual offenses and multiple counts involving extreme pornographic images.
Impact on Victims
During the sentencing hearing, victims shared the psychological toll of Zou’s actions, including recurring nightmares and feelings of despair. One victim expressed that after the assault, she felt like a “trapped animal.”
She remarked, “What happened that night is carved into my soul,” emphasizing fears of potential retaliation from Zou’s influential family in China.
Following the verdict, Saira Pike from the Crown Prosecutor’s Office described Zou as a “serial rapist” who remains a danger to women. She underscored how the evidence, including video footage and online communications, showcased the meticulous and horrifying nature of his crimes.
Since the verdict, over 20 additional women have come forward, believing they may also have been victimized by Zou, especially following an appeal from British police for information.
The Metropolitan Police have indicated that there is evidence suggesting he could have targeted over 50 women. They are encouraging anyone who might be a victim to step forward, as the magnitude of Zou’s actions indicates he could be one of the most prolific offenders in history.
Met commander Kevin Southworth noted that 24 potential victims have already contacted authorities from various locations worldwide, with the primary areas of concern being London and China. However, indications suggest that Zou could have operated globally, raising concerns about the extent of his predatory behavior.
In response, the police are compiling new evidence files to be presented to prosecutors in light of Zou’s recent conviction.
