Priest Delocked After Investigation into Allegations
Father Michael McHugh, who served as a pastor at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Astoria, has been officially delocked following an investigation into child sexual abuse allegations that date back to the 1980s.
This case adds McHugh’s name to a troubling list of accused priests within the Brooklyn parish. A statement from the parish noted that he is now permanently barred from any ministerial duties, which includes public service, and he can no longer reside in church housing.
The allegations first surfaced in late March, prompting an internal parish investigation that found the claims against McHugh to be credible.
Bishop Robert Brennan communicated the decision to parishioners regarding McHugh’s situation. The priest, who was appointed on May 17, 1980, had been affiliated with several locations, including Holy Cross, Our Lady of Refuge, St. Agatha, and St. Jude Shrine, among others throughout Queens and the Bronx.
“This news is troubling for many and understandably confusing,” Bishop Brennan wrote to the Our Lady of Mount Carmel community. He emphasized the importance of having a space for open discussions about such matters, as dialogues can help to mitigate the impact of alarming news.
The parish reaffirmed its commitment to child protection, stating, “The Brooklyn Parish treats all allegations of sexual misconduct with the utmost seriousness and has implemented essential programs to safeguard children.” They encouraged anyone who has experienced clergy sexual abuse to report it to law enforcement or call a dedicated reporting line at 1-888-634-4499.
