Seton Hall’s baseball team experienced a dramatic turn of events during their season opener against Boston College at the Puerto Rico Challenge in Ponce. In the fifth inning, player Justin Ford hit a two-run homer, which, well, seemed like a high point in the game. However, as he celebrated with a jump and a fist pump on his way to second base, things took a tragic turn.
Upon landing, Ford suffered a serious injury that left his ankle bending awkwardly. It was quite the shock. Yet, he completed his circuit around the bases, allowing the Pirates to take a 4-3 lead. Unfortunately, that lead didn’t hold. The Eagles surged back, scoring two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth, ultimately sealing a 6-4 victory.
It’s worth noting that Ford, who played in 15 games last year, had been struggling a bit with a batting average of .175. His on-base percentage was decent, mostly thanks to walks and being hit by pitches, but it seems that his junior season might effectively be over before it truly began.
Seton Hall is set to face Manhattan College and North Carolina State next. On a side note, Boston College, after this game, will also take on Houston and Washington before heading back home. Just goes to show how quickly fortunes can change in sports.
