Now comes the difficult part.
I’m in agony. Uncertainty. It’s strange.
Seton Hall will have to wait until Sunday night to find out if it’s an NCAA Tournament team.
They had a chance to secure an at-large bid, but were crushed 91-72 by No. 5 St. John’s in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals Thursday afternoon.
“I’m at rock bottom right now,” Pirates coach Shaheen Holloway said. “Honestly, I don’t know or care what happens tomorrow or later tonight. You know, I’m very, very disappointed. Sorry for the bad language. I don’t care if you’re offended. I’m sorry if anyone did that, but I’m very depressed right now.”
His disappointment was understandable. St. John’s lost to No. 4 seed Seton Hall (20-12). They were dominant in the paint (42-26) and better on the glass (plus-10).
Star point guard Danis Jenkins only played 22 minutes due to foul trouble, but he didn’t even have to play a big game. It didn’t matter.
Of the Pirates’ big three, only Al Amir Dawes (22 points) appeared. Cadary Richmond and Dre Davis combined to miss 14 of 20 field goals.
“I thought their guys came out hungry. It’s disappointing because they did the same thing for us as we did for the team. ,” Holloway said. “We didn’t play defense like we could defend. They got a lot of stuff in transition. They lived in the paint. They got a lot of paint points. Like I said before. As I said, everything we do for our team is the same thing they did for us today.”
It’s unclear where this will go from Seton Hall. Most bracketologists still believe this tournament will be played, but trips to Dayton and the First Four are favorites.
The Pirates’ own metrics are poor, and their 64th place net ranking will definitely drop when it is updated on Saturday, but with a win over bubble team St. Are we achieving strong victories? (twice), Providence and Villanova.
Seton Hall, which was scheduled to finish ninth in the Big East, finished fourth and was perhaps the league’s biggest surprise.
“Honestly, I think our resumes speak for themselves,” Holloway said. “I think this is the best conference in the country. We won 13 games in the best conference in the country. What else are we talking about right now? … 13 wins in this conference is pretty amazing. is”
Unfortunately for Seton Hall and Holloway, it’s now out of their control.
They will have to make a tough decision and hope the selection committee chooses them.
