Justice Department Charges Seven Chinese Citizens in Marijuana Trafficking Case

The Justice Department has announced charges against seven Chinese nationals, accusing them of operating a marijuana trafficking operation worth millions.

Earlier this week, Massachusetts authorities apprehended six of the defendants, while one remains at large. According to the DOJ, these individuals were smuggled into the country via the US-Mexican border, where they were allegedly employed as marijuana growers. They carried passports that hinted at a smuggling debt needing repayment.

U.S. Attorney Leah Foley stated, “This case unveils a large-scale criminal operation that exploited our immigration system and local communities for profit.” She added that the accused allegedly converted quiet homes throughout the Northeast into centers for illicit businesses, amassing millions through black market activities while using their surroundings as cover.

According to law enforcement, these marijuana operations appear to have started around January 2020 and primarily focus on areas in Massachusetts and Maine. Prosecutors suggest that the operators maintain connections through a network of marijuana cultivators and distributors known as the “East Coast Contact List.”
