A 7-year-old boy was fatally shot in a Bronx home on Sunday afternoon, marking the third incident involving an innocent child caught in gun violence in just a week, according to police.
The child was reportedly inside a residence on East 230th Street in the Wakefield area when he sustained a gunshot wound to his left hand around 4 p.m.
Family members, whose identities haven’t been disclosed, rushed him to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was described as being in stable condition.
Authorities are currently investigating the possibility that the boy might have accidentally fired a gun himself.
While officers responded to a 911 call regarding the shooting, many details are still being looked into.
This recent event follows a troubling trend; last week, two other innocent minors were also struck by gunfire in the Bronx.
On May 12, a 16-year-old named Evette Jeffrey was tragically killed after being shot in the head while leaving a local Chinese restaurant. She was reportedly caught in gang-related crossfire and was not the intended target.
Mayor Eric Adams visited the scene on the same night, speaking with the heartbroken parents.
“Some lives will be destroyed,” Adams remarked about the recent shooting.
He emphasized the city’s responsibility to foster a safe environment for young residents and reiterated the commitment to that goal.
The very next day, an 11-year-old boy was injured in a shooting just a block from where Jeffrey was shot. A teenager fired at someone on a scooter but missed; one bullet shattered the rear window of a passing car, injuring the boy with glass shards. He was also taken to the hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
In that incident, the driver of the vehicle suffered a shoulder wound and is in stable condition as well.
The suspect fled the scene on a city bike.
