Authorities Investigate Fatal Stabbing of Seven-Year-Old Girl in Chicago
Officials are looking into the motive behind a tragic incident in which a seven-year-old girl was reportedly stabbed to death while walking on a sidewalk in Chicago on Saturday.
The accused, a 48-year-old woman whose identity has not yet been made public, was reportedly pursued by witnesses immediately after she stabbed the young girl multiple times in the back, according to a local NBC station.
The victim has been named as Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon, who was sadly declared dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.
This incident took place just before noon on South Cottage Grove Avenue in East Chatham, an area known for a high crime rate on the city’s south side.
Witness footage shows individuals rushing to the scene, with one person dropping their jumper cables to chase after the woman.
At the time of the attack, the girl was holding hands with another woman, as reported by a local ABC affiliate.
The alleged attacker was seen calmly leaving the area, her face obscured in the footage because she has yet to face any charges as of Sunday morning.
It seems that the assailant sustained injuries when bystanders intervened. They called for the police, and she was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening; she is now in police custody.
This isn’t the first violent incident involving the accused. According to reports from a local CBS affiliate, she had previously assaulted a transit worker in 2023 and pleaded guilty in that case.
Detectives have not yet revealed whether a motive for this stabbing has been established. Reports indicate that the attacker appears to be a stranger to the victim, raising questions about the nature of the attack.
The homicide adds to the grim statistics for Chicago, which has seen the highest murder rate in the United States for 13 consecutive years, with over 320 murders recorded in 2026 alone, though some cities have higher rates per capita.
Alderwoman Michelle Harris expressed her sorrow regarding the incident, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the senseless stabbing of a seven-year-old child in our neighborhood. My heart goes out to her family, friends, and everyone who is affected by this horrific incident. No child should ever have to experience violence or fear while simply walking down the sidewalk.”
Harris also took a moment to thank the bystanders for their swift actions in detaining the suspect and alerting emergency services, noting that their quick response may have prevented further harm.
More details from authorities regarding the case are anticipated in the near future.
