A 70-year-old woman from Florida was involved in a tense situation at the Port Orange Police Department on Thursday, where she reportedly fired a gun in the lobby, as confirmed by the police chief.
Authorities stated that there is “no threat to the community” and that “all officers and employees are safe and accounted for” following the incident, which took place around 8:30 a.m. local time.
According to Port Orange Police Chief Manuel Marino, the woman entered the police department’s main lobby holding a handgun, engaging with civilian staff upon arrival.
“She displayed the firearm and remained in the lobby for several minutes before eventually firing a shot towards where some of our civilian staff were present,” Marino explained to reporters on the scene.
“A radio alert was issued regarding an active shooter situation. The officers quickly responded, confronting her as she exited the lobby,” he continued.
There was then an officer-involved shooting, and the woman was taken to the hospital, though her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
“All three officers involved were fortunately unharmed, and there were no injuries reported among civilian staff,” Marino added.
The shooting is currently under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Marino noted that the suspect still had her firearm when officers confronted her, but her condition remains unclear as of now.
