Several deadly accidents with illegal immigrants result in arrests

Authorities across the country have reported multiple arrests of undocumented immigrants linked to deadly accidents involving drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, including teenagers.

According to Tricia McLaughlin, a deputy spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, these incidents seem to happen almost daily. She noted, “These tragic deaths are preventable because these individuals shouldn’t have been in our country in the first place.”

In Louisiana, for instance, 31-year-old Juan Alfredo Chavalia Rezama is accused of fatally hitting a 15-year-old cyclist on Thursday evening in Livingston Parish. The young victim was rushed to a hospital but later died from his injuries. Chavalia has been charged with vehicular homicide, DUI, and driving without a license. He was already under the scrutiny of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In another incident, 31-year-old Lionel Francisco allegedly struck a Massachusetts woman while she was walking along the curb in her neighborhood. Driving with a learner’s permit, he remained at the scene post-accident and cooperated with law enforcement. However, ICE stated he is originally from Angola and has overstayed his tourist visa, which expired on July 30.

In Maine, an individual named Mukendi Mbiya, also from Angola, has been accused of fatally hitting a 64-year-old woman in New Gloucester. He entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in December 2018, but it expired in June 2019, and he did not leave.

Meanwhile, in Florida, Harjinder Singh, another undocumented immigrant from India, faced charges after allegedly making illegal U-turns near Port St. Lucie. His actions led to a crash that resulted in three fatalities. Reports indicate he failed to recognize several road signs and had a questionable grasp of English. Strangely, despite restrictions, he was granted a commercial driver’s license in Washington state in 2023.

The article also mentions Noelia Salei Martinez Avila, a 30-year-old woman arrested in Wisconsin. She is accused of hitting and killing two high school boys while driving the wrong way. Interestingly, she had a prior DUI conviction from 2020.

As these tragedies unfold, there’s increasing scrutiny on immigration policies. McLaughlin remarked that if these individuals hadn’t been allowed to remain in the U.S., innocent lives could have been spared. She also mentioned the challenges posed by local sanctuary policies in enforcing immigration regulations.
