Tour Bus Crash in New York Results in Multiple Fatalities
There have been reports of “multiple fatalities” after a tragic bus accident in Pembroke, New York.
According to New York State Trooper James O’Callaghan, a tour bus collided with a semi-truck on Interstate 90, leading to several deaths, injuries, and many passengers trapped inside the bus.
The bus was carrying more than 50 people at the time, including children.
O’Callaghan mentioned that the bus driver survived the crash, during which the vehicle overturned, causing a significant section of the Thruway to be shut down. He also noted that several passengers were trapped, while some were thrown from the bus.
The bus was transporting foreign tourists back to New York City from Niagara Falls, reportedly from places like China, India, and the Philippines. To help those affected, translators are being sent to the crash site and local hospitals, as per O’Callaghan.
The incident happened near Pembroke, about 25 miles east of Buffalo, and rescue operations were ongoing as of 3 p.m. ET.
Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz informed residents via social media about significant traffic delays, stating that a part of the Interstate would remain closed “until further notice” due to this serious accident.
Governor Kathy Hochul also released a statement shortly after learning about the crash, assuring the public that her team is committed to rescuing and aiding everyone involved.
Multiple fire departments, rescue units, and four Mercy Flight helicopters have been deployed to the scene. Preparations are being made for helicopters to land in the highway median. Additional heavy rescue teams from nearby areas are also on standby to assist with the extrication efforts.
