Severe storm to hit New York City with heavy rain and flooding

Severe Nor’easter Expected in New York City

This weekend, a strong nor’easter is on track to bring heavy rain and gusty winds to New York City, possibly leading to significant flooding by the start of the work week.

Experts predict that the storm could unleash between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain across the five boroughs from Sunday night into Monday, though actual totals may be higher.

The National Weather Service cautioned that sustained strong onshore winds, high waves, and an astronomical storm surge could lead to substantial coastal flooding in some East Coast regions.

Residents in low-lying areas or near the coast are advised to prepare for flooding similar to the rapid inundation seen in July, which affected basements and subways.

Particularly vulnerable areas include southern Brooklyn, southern Queens, eastern Staten Island, and sections of the Bronx, as indicated by the city’s Office of Emergency Management.

Rain began lightly on Saturday and is expected to intensify after 8 a.m. on Sunday.

By the evening, forecasts suggest continued rainfall with winds reaching up to 33 mph and gusts possibly hitting 41 mph.

This outlook is likely to persist into Monday, easing only later in the evening.

A coastal flood watch will be in effect from Sunday to Monday, with waves predicted to reach heights of 12 to 15 feet, causing tides to possibly exceed normal levels by 2 to 4 feet and resulting in significant coastal erosion and dune damage.

In preparation for the impending storm, New Jersey already declared a state of emergency starting at noon on Saturday.

The New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) is urging communities at risk to take proactive measures, like assembling emergency go bags and gathering essential supplies.

Residents are also advised to relocate parked vehicles to safer areas and clear local drainages to manage stormwater more effectively.

Real-time flood conditions can be monitored through NYCEM’s FloodNet website.

NYCEM Commissioner Zach Iskol stated, “We are closely watching this storm as it progresses north along the coast. While the exact effects will vary based on the storm’s track, we anticipate strong winds and coastal flooding, particularly in vulnerable communities. We encourage New Yorkers to prepare now: make plans, stay informed about local conditions, and register for Notify NYC alerts.”
