Severe storms are expected to hit the eastern U.S. over Memorial Day weekend, bringing gusty winds, tornadoes and increased rainfall to some areas as people celebrate the federal holiday.
Thunderstorms and increased rainfall are expected across parts of Kansas, Oklahoma and central Texas. according to According to the National Weather Service (NWS), these thunderstorms are expected to continue through Sunday morning.
“The hazards associated with these thunderstorms are frequent lightning, severe thunderstorm gusts, hail, and a few tornadoes,” the NWS said.
Wind gusts of more than 65 knots also pose a threat for parts of western Missouri, Kansas and northern Oklahoma.
Thunderstorms and showers are approaching, with heavy rain expected across northwest Arkansas, western Missouri, eastern Kansas and southeastern Nebraska, according to the NWS.
“Associated heavy rainfall will likely cause primarily localized flash flooding, with urban areas, roads, streams and low-lying areas most vulnerable,” the NWS said Saturday.
Severe thunderstorms are expected across parts of the Mid-Mississippi and Ohio River valleys, with storms likely to hit various Midwestern cities, including Cincinnati, St. Louis, Chicago and Indianapolis.
The threat of heavy rain is expected to move into parts of the Northeast on Monday, with flood warnings in effect for parts of Tennessee and Mississippi.
Parts of the South will be spared the storm but will seek out cooler areas.
Temperatures in these areas could reach as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit over the long weekend.
