Emotional MVP Speech by Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
During the 2024-25 NBA MVP Awards on Wednesday, Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander opened up emotionally while addressing his wife, Haley Summers, in his speech.
At a press conference in Oklahoma City, Gilgeous-Alexander became tearful as he expressed gratitude for everything she has taught him about love and sacrifice.
“Haley Summers, there’s only one of you,” he said, wiping away tears. “Sorry, it feels so dramatic.”
As he glanced at his wife and their son in the audience, the 26-year-old player continued, “To Ares, our son, I’m grateful for everything. You were the first to show me the depth of love, what true sacrifice means.”
The Canadian star paused, visibly emotional.
“I’m looking forward to spending the rest of this journey called life with you. I appreciate everything. Honestly, I’m not the same person or player without you.”
The couple tied the knot last February.
Summers, originally from Hamilton, Ontario, shared her excitement on Instagram, posting several tearful emojis and a cute picture of their son in an “MVP” sweatshirt.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s recognition comes after he led his team to take a 1-0 lead over the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals. They celebrated together post the Thunder’s 114-88 victory in Oklahoma City.
In his speech, he also acknowledged his teammates and family, emphasizing the support he’s received.
Moreover, his latest signature sneakers, the Converse Shai 001, were unveiled, with a design inspired by Haley’s eye color.
This season, Gilgeous-Alexander has averaged 32.7 points per game, alongside 5.0 rebounds and 6.4 assists, securing the NBA scoring title. The Thunder will face the Timberwolves again in Game 2 of the series on Thursday.
