Shai Gilgeous-Alexander didn’t have much to say after a game where he struggled significantly.
The Thunder star, who is in the running for NBA MVP this season, managed only 18 points on a tough 7-of-22 shooting night. He went cold during overtime, leading to a 113-104 loss against the Nuggets on Friday night in Denver, putting the Thunder down 2-1 in the Western Conference Semi-Final Series.
He didn’t attempt any shots in the extra period, further contributing to the team’s challenges.
“The game slows down, and execution becomes critical,” Gilgeous-Alexander remarked. “When that happens, it often relies on your top player to step up and make plays. I didn’t do that enough tonight, and I think that’s a big part of why we lost.”
Jalen Williams from the Thunder stepped up with a personal-best 32 points, though it still wasn’t sufficient for a win.
Interestingly, Gilgeous-Alexander noted that Williams maybe should have taken more shots in the final quarter, questioning some of the decisions made.
According to reports, 18 of Gilgeous-Alexander’s 22 attempts were heavily contested, and he only converted five free throws during the game.
“Honestly, you either thrive or fall based on your choices, and tonight I fell,” he admitted. “It’s just how it goes. I found myself in good spots, made some tough attempts, and I take responsibility for those outcomes, whether they work out or not. It’s all part of the game.”
However, his shooting woes weren’t isolated; teammates managed to put up only a handful of shots alongside Gilgeous-Alexander’s potential for 24 assists.
As he exited the court, Nuggets fans made their voices known, yet he remained hopeful, trying to keep a smile on his face amid the disappointment.
In the end, Gilgeous-Alexander is set on turning things around.
“I refuse to show that I’m defeated or upset,” he said. “Nothing’s decided yet. The series isn’t over. There’s plenty to look forward to. I know I can do better, and I’m looking to make that happen in the next game.”
