Thunder Dominates Timberwolves in Game 1 of Western Conference Finals
In Oklahoma City, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took control in the second half, scoring 20 of his 31 points, leading the top-seeded Thunder to a 114-88 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in the opening game of the Western Conference Finals on Tuesday night.
The MVP finalist not only showcased his scoring ability but also tallied nine assists, with eight of his 14 baskets coming after halftime.
Julius Randle stood out for Minnesota, finishing with 28 points, though he struggled somewhat after halftime with just eight points. Anthony Edwards, who has been averaging 26.5 points in the playoffs, managed to put up 18 points on 13 shots.
Interestingly, the Thunder had just a two-day break after their grueling Game 7 win against Denver in the conference semi-finals, while the Timberwolves hadn’t played since May 14.
Looking ahead, Game 2 is set for Thursday in Oklahoma City.
At halftime, Minnesota was leading 48-44, with Randle hitting five of six three-pointers early on. Before the break, Gilgeous-Alexander had managed to score 11 points.
The Thunder launched a significant 10-0 run in the third quarter, turning a deficit into a 66-60 advantage.
A notable moment came when Kenrich Williams, usually a bench player this postseason, hit a three-pointer followed by a mid-range jumper, pushing the Thunder ahead to 71-62. Oklahoma City outscored Minnesota 32-18 in the third quarter, building a 76-66 lead.
The crowd erupted when Holmglen executed a spinning dunk, adding to the Thunder’s lead at 86-75.
As the game progressed, Gilgeous-Alexander managed to throw a shot while fouled on the floor, adding a free throw to make the score 91-77 with seven minutes remaining. It was quite an evening of highlights for the Thunder.
