Funeral for Slain Philadelphia Officer

PHILADELPHIA — On Tuesday, the city hosted thousands of police officers from across the nation for the funeral of Shane Seiber, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on October 10. Authorities reported that an armed suspect shot him and his partner.

During the ceremony at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel announced that Seiber had been posthumously promoted to sergeant.

Seiber had a distinguished career, serving a decade with the police after spending ten years in the Air Force, including two deployments to Iraq.

Numerous officers from Pennsylvania and beyond gathered to honor his memory.

Suspect Charged in Seiber’s Death

Seiber and his partner responded to a report of an armed individual in West Philadelphia when, allegedly, a man named Eric Lewis confronted them. He reportedly asked what they were doing at his home, which led to an argument. In the chaos, Lewis shot Seiber three times and injured his partner with 12 shots. After a standoff, Lewis was arrested; he was found with two handguns—one of which belonged to the officers—and a shotgun.

Seiber’s partner, identified as Officer Hector Rodriguez III, aged 33 and a father of five, survived the attack.

Regarding Lewis, it’s worth noting that he had previously been acquitted in another murder case, as pointed out by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, who mentioned that the investigation in that previous case had been seriously flawed.

In a touching tribute during her eulogy, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker shared that the city plans to establish an annual internship program for public service to honor Seiber. She described him as “a giant of a man” and “a first-class gentleman.”

Seiber is survived by his wife, Lisa, and their two young children, Finn, 7, and Emily, 3. It’s just so sad when you think about the family he leaves behind.
