Midtown Shooting Incident Overview
Reports from police and sources indicate that Shane Tamura unleashed nearly 50 rounds during a shooting spree in Midtown.
The disoriented gunman directed most of the gunfire at Rudin Management’s office located at 345 Park Ave, which has 33 stories.
Authorities recovered 24 spent shell casings along with 15 bullet fragments at the scene, where Tamura shot 27-year-old Julia Heyman, an associate at the real estate firm, before turning the gun on himself.
In addition, another 23 casings and 13 bullet fragments were discovered in the lobby and on the first floor of the building where Tamura carried out his attack on Monday.
Officers found over 800 unused .357 Magnum rounds in Tamura’s black BMW, which he had parked while standing guard at the exit.
During the incident, Tamura fatally shot NYPD officer DiDalle Islam, who was working an extra shift, and also killed 43-year-old Wesley Lepatner, a Blackstone executive who was hiding in the lobby.
After this, Tamura took the elevator, surprisingly allowing one woman to exit unharmed, suggesting a sudden realization about his focus on targeting the NFL, according to authorities.
Most of the gunfire was aimed at the 33rd floor, where Tamura mistakenly entered while looking for the NFL headquarters.
Tamura’s rampage resulted in four fatalities, including NYPD officials who were working security.
A suicide note was found, revealing his belief that he targeted sports organizations because he suspected he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
In the note, he criticized the NFL, referencing former Pittsburgh Steelers player Terry Long, who had been diagnosed with CTE before taking his own life 20 years ago.
The memo included the statement, “Study the brain of CTE. Sorry, the league intentionally hid the dangers in its brain to maximize profits.” He concluded with, “They made us fail.”
Tamura reportedly had a history of mental health issues, and investigators found prescription medications for depression and epilepsy at his home in Las Vegas. Sources indicate that he felt he was a “complete disappointment” to his parents, including his father, who had retired from the police force.
