A beachgoer was treated and recovering after a “possible shark bite” at a Hilton Head Island resort on Monday.
Shore Beach Patrol officials told WSAV News 3 the incident happened just after noon Monday near beach marker 26 at Sea Pines Resort.
Lifeguards said the swimmer was bleeding after leaving the water but insisted his wounds were healing.
Authorities did not release the victim’s name or age, but confirmed to News 3 that she did not need to be taken to the hospital.

The area where the shark bite was reported was closed off for about 30 minutes until authorities could ensure the area was safe and secured.
According to Shore Beach Services, this is the first reported shark bite incident on Hilton Head this year, but officials said there were “unconfirmed but possible shark bite incidents earlier this year.”
The only other shark attack reported on Hilton Head Island occurred in 2023.
A 65-year-old man was bitten by a shark while spearfishing off the coast of South Carolina, according to the Coast Guard.

The Hilton Head Island town government told Fox News Digital the swimmer was bitten on the leg while in waist-deep water at Sea Pines Beach.

According to the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File, there were 57 reported random shark bites on humans worldwide in 2022. Of those, 41 occurred in the United States.
According to the International Shark Attack File, 76 shark attacks have been reported in South Carolina since 2012.

The top 10 most dangerous beaches are all located in Florida, according to Simrin Law’s report. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, made the top 25. According to Fox Tampa, the location has seen 24 fatal surf zone and shark attacks, as well as 33 hurricanes.
