Sharpton praises Kamala Harris as a strong influence in the Black community

Sharpton Highlights Kamala Harris’ Role Ahead of 2028 Elections

Al Sharpton, host of MS NOW, believes that former Vice President Kamala Harris is being overlooked as a potential presidential candidate for 2028. However, he plans to ensure that the Black community recognizes her contributions during the upcoming convention.

Sharpton is gearing up for the National Action Network’s 35th anniversary conference, which is set to take place next week in New York City. This gathering will feature prominent figures in Black political circles, various Democratic candidates eyeing the Black vote, and influential activists.

Harris is expected to participate alongside other prospective candidates like Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Despite the Democratic Party facing challenges following her defeat to Donald Trump in the 2024 elections, Sharpton emphasizes that Harris remains an influential figure for many Black voters.

“I’m not going to ignore that she’s a significant force in our community,” Sharpton remarked. “While I can’t say if she’ll run for office again, her past achievements and the fact that she garnered an impressive number of votes should not be underestimated.” He mentioned that she received more votes than any presidential candidate in history, aside from Trump. It’s worth noting that this claim overlooks Joe Biden’s record of 81.2 million votes in 2020, making his number the highest.

In the coming weeks, Harris will be attending a series of state party fundraisers in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, along with a Democratic Party event in Arkansas.

Interestingly, a recent analysis pointed out that Harris’ engagement in the South is likely a strategic move, not only hinting at a possible run in 2028 but also highlighting the need for other candidates to enhance their appeal among Black voters.

Sharpton noted the competitive nature of the race, emphasizing that several candidates have the experience and support needed to win over the Black community. “No one can take the Black vote for granted,” he stated.

On a different note, far-left podcaster Joy Reid, previously a colleague of Sharpton, expressed skepticism about Harris running for president again, suggesting that the U.S. may not be ready to elect a woman to that position. “I hope she doesn’t run again,” Reid expressed during a podcast, adding that she believes Harris serves better in her current capacity.

In February, there were hints that Harris might consider another presidential run. Time will tell how these dynamics unfold as the political landscape continues to shift.
