Shawn Kemp Sentenced to Home Monitoring Following Incident
In March 2023, Shawn Kemp received a sentence of 30 days of electronic home monitoring after an incident where he discharged a firearm in a parking lot at a Tacoma shopping mall.
The former NBA All-Star is required to start his home monitoring within two weeks. He must also undergo a year of state supervision and complete 240 hours of community service, as reported.
In May, Kemp pleaded guilty to another offense, admitting to breaking into a truck and shooting at two men in a Toyota 4Runner while attempting to retrieve stolen items, which included his business keys, cell phone, paperwork, and sports memorabilia.
Kemp then managed to track the location of his phone, leading him to identify the burglar driving the stolen vehicle. Reports suggest he returned fire when one of the men began shooting at him.
Initially, Kemp faced serious charges, including first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement, along with second-degree assault and charges related to a drive-by shooting in May.
His attorney, Tim Leary, emphasized Kemp’s intention to move forward positively. He mentioned that the state offered a plea that allowed Kemp to take responsibility, but there was also a recognition of self-defense in the situation.
Prosecutors had recommended a harsher prison sentence of a year, indicating the seriousness of the case.
Kemp, who enjoyed a notable 14-year career in the NBA before retiring after the 2002-03 season, had memorable moments with the Seattle Supersonics, including competing in three NBA Finals and being named to the All-NBA second team during his time in Seattle.
