Lucy Biggers: A Journey from Climate Activism to Conservative Media

Lucy Biggers is now a wife, mother, and a social media editor at The Free Press, a conservative outlet. But her journey took a significant turn over the last few years. Once a well-known climate activist and an influencer in progressive circles, she helped produce a viral video in 2018 that contributed to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s electoral success.

During a recent episode of “Relatable,” Lucy recounted her surprising transformation from what she called a “climate influencer” and “left-handed social justice warrior” to a vocal critic of New York City’s Democratic mayoral candidate, Zoran Mamdani.

Lucy describes her disillusionment with the environmental movement, suggesting it often prioritizes protest over genuine concern for the environment. She feels these movements are intertwined with other leftist ideologies that don’t truly value ecological issues.

“The climate movement doesn’t really care about the environment,” Lucy stated. “It’s more about protesting and a disdain for industry, particularly in the West.” This shift in perspective led her to reevaluate her support for socialist policies she once championed, especially those advocated by figures like Mamdani.

Mamdani’s proposals range from police refunds to the establishment of city-owned grocery stores. Lucy, who has long worked in New York, shared her alarm with followers after Mamdani’s recent win against Andrew Cuomo.

She reflected, “Honestly, if I were 25, I would have probably loved Zoran Mamdani. At 26, I was a fan of AOC. But I’ve come to realize that well-meaning leftist policies often lead to problems they aim to solve.” An example she cited is the 2019 Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act, which, while intended to stabilize rent prices in New York City, has ironically led to a housing shortage.

As Lucy explains, many landlords are unable to make necessary updates to their properties because of the burdensome regulations. “There are tens of thousands of empty rent-controlled apartments in New York City,” she noted, “because landlords can’t afford the costs while being limited to charging low rent.”

The left often demonizes “greedy landlords,” but Lucy argues that it is the excessive regulation that hampers effective solutions. “I’m just trying to help everyone see that these overregulated left-wing policies can create the very monsters we don’t want,” she insists.

Despite her reservations, Lucy believes Mamdani will still win over voters. He appears to have successfully sold socialism as a promising alternative, despite being labeled by her as a “Nepo baby,” “hypocrite,” and “snake oil salesman.”

“Wherever socialism is implemented, it often leads to dire consequences,” she warns, citing examples from Cuba, Venezuela, and the former Soviet Union. “These experiments have a history of failing.”
