Controversy in Women’s Soccer Over Editorial
Former professional soccer player Elizabeth Eddy stirred the pot with her recent editorial. She advocated for defined eligibility criteria concerning biological sex in the National Women’s Soccer League to maintain fairness in women’s soccer. However, her views faced significant backlash from fellow players.
Eddy encountered strong criticism from her Angel City FC teammates, who denounced her piece as harmful and labeled it as transphobic and racist.
In contrast, Blaze TV host Allie Beth Stuckey expressed appreciation for Eddy’s willingness to highlight pressing issues in women’s sports. “She didn’t back down,” Stuckey remarked, curious about Eddy’s thoughts following the article’s release.
Eddy recounted how, after the editorial was published, team captains were tasked with addressing the media. “It was tough to hear,” she said, referring to how her close relationships with the captains made their public condemnation more painful.
Despite her insistence that the article was neither “racist” nor “transphobic,” her teammates maintained that it contained such undertones. One teammate expressed at a press event the emotional impact the piece had on the team: “It’s really important for me to say, they’re hurt by the article.” Another added that they felt it carried an underlying transphobic tone.
In response, Eddy explained her confusion and shock at the accusations. “You can’t even think of that,” she remarked, struggling to understand where the sentiment was coming from.
When asked if her teammates were open to a private conversation regarding the article, she acknowledged that those who spoke out publicly were not interested in discussing it further. However, she heard from several teammates who did not align with the views expressed by their captains.
Stuckey probed whether Eddy felt let down by teammates who agreed with her but were reluctant to voice their support. Eddy admitted that she had mixed feelings. “On one hand, I feel like come on, let’s not let this issue snowball. But I can understand their hesitation, too. It was a tough situation for me,” she replied, admitting she also wavered on the topic for a while.
