California Woman Pleads Guilty to Murdering Firefighter Spouse

A 54-year-old woman from California admitted last week to the murder of her spouse, who was a captain with Cal Fire, in 2025.

Yolanda Olejniczak Marody is slated for sentencing on September 2nd and could receive a sentence ranging from 36 years to life in prison.

On February 17, 2025, around 9 p.m., the body of 49-year-old Cal Fire Chief Rebecca “Becky” Marody was discovered in their home in Ramona, where she had been fatally stabbed.

Authorities reported that deputies found Rebecca with multiple stab wounds on her body, especially in the neck, chest, and abdomen.

Shortly after Becky’s murder, law enforcement issued an arrest warrant for Yolanda Marody. They noted that surveillance footage captured Yolanda in a heated argument with Rebecca, during which she appeared to physically assault her earlier that evening.

The affidavit revealed that during the confrontation, Rebecca could be seen struggling and pleading, saying, “Yolanda! Please…I don’t want to die.” Yolanda’s response, captured on video while holding a knife, was, “I should have thought about that earlier.”

About ten minutes later, Yolanda was seen gathering pets, belongings, and packing them into a silver Chevrolet Equinox SUV. The vehicle was later tracked by the Department of Homeland Security as it crossed the border into Mexico.

After being on the run for 33 days, Yolanda was apprehended at a hotel in Mexicali, which is situated roughly two miles south of the U.S. border and about 275 miles from where her wife had been killed.

Rebecca had dedicated 30 years of service to Cal Fire, notably contributing to efforts against the devastating Eaton Fire. Following her passing, the Cal Fire and Riverside County Fire Department expressed their sorrow, emphasizing that she was a cherished member of both the community and department.

This tragic case echoes Yolanda’s past; in October 2000, she attempted to evade authorities with her two young children after the stabbing death of her then-estranged husband. Previously, she served time in prison for fatally stabbing her first spouse, James Joseph Olejniczak, in San Bernardino County. Yolanda pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter in that case and was incarcerated from 2004 to 2013.
