It looks like one of the leading players in MLB trade talks might be sidelined for the rest of the season, just ahead of the August 3 deadline.
Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers, having a standout year both defensively and offensively, has reportedly torn his meniscus. He sustained the injury while running the bases, and now the team is weighing the option of surgery, which, if pursued, would end his 2026 season.
At 28 years old, Langeliers has been a pivotal player for the Athletics. So, it seems that teams interested in acquiring the All-Star catcher may have to reconsider. Despite the team’s current 44-60 record, making them unlikely playoff contenders, they weren’t planning to let go of one of their finest athletes.
Langeliers recently participated in his first All-Star Game and has been consistently performing while other teammates struggle with injuries. His stats this season include a .263 batting average, .332 on-base percentage, and an impressive .497 slugging percentage, with 23 home runs and 51 RBIs. These figures were eagerly anticipated after a solid 2025 season where he hit 31 home runs and boasted a career-high .861 OPS.
His injury is certainly a setback, overshadowing what could have been another record-breaking year. It seems unlikely that potential postseason teams would now look to the Athletics for Langeliers either. For instance, the New York Yankees, who were eyeing catchers at the deadline, might have to shift their focus elsewhere. Players like Hunter Goodman from the Rockies or Adley Rutschman from the Orioles may gain more attention as teams seek to bolster their rosters.
In Langeliers’ absence, Jonah Heim will likely step up as the primary catcher. Interestingly, he’s also been mentioned in trade discussions due to his experience. Still, his playing time might not be as substantial.
