Shedeur Sanders Ready to Step Up as Browns Quarterback
Currently sitting third on the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback depth chart, Shedeur Sanders has expressed his readiness to take the field whenever needed. He’s confident he can outperform the current starter after observing the quarterback play in the NFL over the last few weeks.
“If you’re watching quarterback play in the league right now, I know I can do better than that,” Sanders shared.
Sanders is behind veteran Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, who was drafted two rounds ahead of him in April. Despite this, he’s preparing as if his number could be called at any moment. “It’s not really up to me why I haven’t played yet. If there’s an opportunity to play, I’m ready,” he said.
His father, the Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, has predicted that Shedeur will start for the Browns at some point this season. “I focus on what I have to do every day. Where I stand on the depth chart doesn’t change my mindset. You really can’t know what’s going to happen, so I just keep a focus on staying ready,” he added.
Flacco was named the starter by head coach Kevin Stefanski at the end of training camp in August. While Flacco hasn’t stood out in the last three weeks, the coaching staff hasn’t made any changes to the depth chart as Gabriel has yet to back up Flacco.
Sanders’ conversation about his future began after ESPN Cleveland asked about comments from his father. Deion discussed “feeling it” on the “New Heights” podcast, urging his son to be patient but ready. However, he declined to predict when Shedeur might take his first snap.
The Browns selected Shedeur with the intention of developing him for the future, with Flacco serving as a temporary solution until one of the rookies is ready to lead. For now, it looks like Gabriel may have the upper hand, but the situation remains fluid as the season just gets underway.
