Browns Rookie Shedeur Sanders Struggles in Loss to 49ers
On Sunday, the excitement surrounding Shedeur Sanders seemed to wane as the rookie quarterback from the Cleveland Browns found himself struggling during a game against the San Francisco 49ers, raising some eyebrows about head coach Kevin Stefanski’s play calling.
Sanders did manage to throw a touchdown pass to Harold Fannin Jr., which briefly put the Browns in the lead during the second quarter and even caught the attention of LeBron James. However, that ended up being the only score for Cleveland in the matchup.
After the touchdown, the Browns’ offense stalled, leading to two punts. When Fannin fumbled the ball, the 49ers quickly recovered, and a similar fate awaited punt returner Gage Rabadine, who also lost the ball. The Browns further compounded their issues with two turnovers in the fourth quarter.
When questioned about Stefanski’s decision-making, particularly regarding fourth downs, Sanders replied, “First of all, it’s a rude question to ask if it was a great call by the coach. I like to play outside, so whatever comes with that goes along with me. We’re not here to point fingers at the coaches or anything like that. That’s very disrespectful. That’s not even my place.”
Though Sanders didn’t turn the ball over, he completed 16 of 25 passes for 149 yards. The 49ers’ defense was aggressive, sacking him three times.
Reflecting on the game, he expressed disappointment about the team’s inability to regain momentum. “Even if I take a shot and miss, I’ve got to keep taking shots and keep everyone together. I know the offense and the team expect me to do my job, and I’ll do what I have to do. I feel like I didn’t live up to their expectations today,” he shared.
Looking ahead, Stefanski indicated that Sanders would be starting again next week against the Tennessee Titans.
