Shedule Sanders Set for First Start with Browns

Shedule Sanders is keeping a cool head as he gears up for his initial start in the NFL.

The head coach of the Browns, Kevin Stefanski, has officially announced Sanders as the starting quarterback for their upcoming game against the Raiders. The rookie, who hails from Colorado, is feeling enthusiastic about the opportunity.

“I’m in a good spot mentally and emotionally,” said Sanders, the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, during a press conference on Wednesday. “Adversity is part of life; things rarely go perfectly. But I’m ready for what’s ahead.”

Last Sunday, Sanders made his debut in a regular season game against the Ravens, stepping in for fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, who left due to a concussion.

Although the game was challenging for both teams, Sanders faced quite a bit of pressure. He completed just 4 out of 16 passes for 47 yards, with one interception, and he was sacked twice, finishing with a quarterback rating of 13.5.

Being a fifth-round draft pick, he’s been oscillating between third-string and reserve this season, so getting actual game time was a significant gain for him. “It was great to finally step onto the field and break through after sitting on the sidelines for weeks,” he explained. “Rookies often find it tough to compete, and I don’t think that’s fully understood.”

The Browns are in dire need of long-term quarterback stability. They’ve had moments with Baker Mayfield, but since trading him before the 2022 season, their struggles have persisted.

Sanders expressed that he feels the weight of expectations from the fans. “I know they have high hopes, and if I don’t deliver, I’m failing not just myself but the organization too,” he said. “I’ve done what I need to prepare for this role. The pressure has only accelerated my growth. Honestly, I thrive under pressure. I’m looking forward to everything that’s coming.”
