Despite Sheduer Sanders’ impressive debut with the Panthers, he’s still sitting at No. 4 on the Browns’ quarterback depth chart, ahead of their second preseason game.
Cleveland’s announcement lists Joe Flacco as the primary quarterback, followed by injured Kenny Pickett, rookie Dillon Gabriel, and then Sanders.
In his first game, Sanders, age 23, completed 14 out of 23 passes for 138 yards and threw two touchdowns, while also rushing four times for 19 yards.
It’s important to remember that the depth chart is fluid; it can change frequently based on performance and player stats.
For instance, RJ Harvey was listed as the fifth-string running back for the Broncos, yet it seems unlikely he’ll be cut. So, things aren’t always as straightforward as they appear.
Sanders entered training camp as the fourth option, and the Browns appear comfortable with their current lineup, even after his strong showing.
The expectation has been that either Flacco or Pickett would start, especially since Gabriel was drafted earlier than Sanders.
With both Pickett and Gabriel out with injuries, Sanders did get some first-team practice reps leading up to Friday’s game.
While one solid performance in preseason doesn’t automatically alter the team’s view, the Browns’ head coach emphasized player development in the wake of their 30-10 victory.
“I’m pleased with the guys’ progress, but I’m not jumping into the quarterback race,” said the coach of the Browns.
Keeping Sanders at fourth string offers a more cautious approach amid the uncertainty of injured teammates, allowing everyone to focus on their own performance without stressing about competition.
Stefanski sidestepped questions about whether Sanders would see more time with first or second teams going forward.
“I’m pleased with how Sanders played and how he responded to pressure,” he remarked last week.
Even as Pickett and Gabriel recover, it’s been suggested that Sanders has a great opportunity against the Eagles this Saturday.
If he can keep delivering solid performances, it could bolster his position on the team, regardless of where he stands on the depth chart.
ESPN has indicated the Browns might keep all four quarterbacks, although a trade could still be possible before camp officially opens.
Reflecting on his performance, Sanders noted, “I had some ups and downs. I know you don’t want to repeat mistakes.”
