Shedur Sanders’ NFL Debut: A Mixed Bag Performance
Shedur Sanders recently shared his thoughts on the challenges of playing in the NFL after leading the Cleveland Browns to a win against the Las Vegas Raiders in his first game as a starter on Sunday.
His performance had its struggles, completing 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards, along with one touchdown and an interception. He made a notable 54-yard pass to Isaiah Bond and a short throw to Dylan Sampson, who then sprinted for a 66-yard touchdown.
The rookie quarterback expressed gratitude for the chance to play but acknowledged that not having enough practice time with the first-team offense wasn’t an excuse for his 55% completion rate and an 87.3 passer rating.
“Everyone starts from a different place. We didn’t have the summer squad because, well, we weren’t in the best position to be prepared then,” he reflected. “But that shouldn’t excuse poor execution. You have to perform; there’s no choice.”
Sanders filled in for Dillon Gabriel, who was sidelined due to a concussion. He described the experience of playing for the Browns, after being drafted in the fifth round, as surreal.
He’s aware of the little mistakes he made and plans to improve going forward, mentioning, “It’s a one-way street, and the only direction is up.”
With this victory, Sanders became the first rookie quarterback for the Browns to start in an NFL game since Eric Zayer back in 1995. Zayer, a third-round pick from Georgia, secured his first victory against the Cincinnati Bengals during his initial start on October 29, 1995. The Browns had a rough season that year, finishing at 5-11, later relocating to Baltimore in 1996 and becoming the Ravens.
