Shedeur Sanders Changes Jersey Number for NFL Season
Shedeur Sanders is making a shift for his second NFL season, returning to his Colorado roots. He’ll be changing his jersey number from No. 12 to No. 2 as he joins the Cleveland Browns.
The announcement was shared on social media by the Browns, and Sanders also chimed in on X, posting “#2” to echo the news. This number change follows the departure of receiver DeAndre Carter, who wore No. 2 last season and has since been removed from the roster.
Interestingly, Sanders also wore No. 2 during his time at Jackson State prior to transferring to Colorado, where his father, Deion Sanders, took over as head coach. I think it’s kind of neat how he’s returning to that number now.
Sanders’ 2025 season has been quite the ride. Initially, he faced challenges during the draft but managed to hold his own. He had a rocky debut—wearing No. 12 last year—while veteran Joe Flacco held the starting quarterback position. However, after Flacco’s injury and subsequent trade to the Bengals, Sanders found himself stepping up as the season progressed.
He made his first start against the Las Vegas Raiders, achieving a mixed record of 3-4 in seven games, but remained the starter for the rest of the season. Following some shakeups in coaching, head coach Todd Monken has now taken the reins and plans for an open quarterback competition heading into 2026.
Monken mentioned during a recent NFL conference that they aren’t quite clear yet on whether Sanders will take the lead in the offseason program. Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson is back with the Browns, and quarterback Dillon Gabriel is healthy again. So, there’s a bit of uncertainty about what’s next for Sanders.
With the nature of the NFL being what it is, I guess he knows he needs to prove himself anew under this new regime. In a way, it’s almost refreshing—though it can be stressful to juggle all these changes at once.
Despite the challenges, it’s noteworthy that Sanders has already managed to earn a Pro Bowl spot, which is impressive for a player with relatively limited NFL experience. Now, he’s looking to leverage that momentum while embracing a fresh start in his new jersey.
