Colorado State football coach Deion Sanders said his sons, Buffaloes quarterback Shedule Sanders and cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter, would be selected for the 2025 NFL Draft depending on the situation. He said he is open to acquiring Eli Manning.
During a recent appearance “A Game Worth a Million Dollars” PodcastSanders, who previously said before declaring for the draft that his son and Hunter would spend the 2024 season in Colorado, said he knows where he wants them to play and has ruled out “certain cities.” He explained that it was happening.
“Top four,” the Hall of Fame cornerback said Friday when asked where he thought Shedur and Travis would be selected. “Anywhere from 1 to 4 is fine. One of them is [number] One…and the latter never less than four.
“Now, this is all subjective, because I know where I want them to go, and let’s not forget.” [Buffaloes safety] Shiro [Sanders], but I know where I want them to go. I mean, there are some cities that won’t make it…that’s going to be Eli. we are not doing that. ”
Sanders mentioned when former Giants quarterback Eli Manning was the unanimous No. 1 pick in the 2004 NFL Draft, and told the San Diego Chargers, who had the No. 1 pick, I told him I didn’t want to play.
The Chargers selected Manning with the first overall pick, but less than an hour later he was traded to the Giants for New York University’s fourth pick, Philip Rivers, and other draft picks.
Manning won two Super Bowls with the Giants, won the game’s MVP in both, and was selected to the Pro Bowl four times during his 16-season career in New York.
A similar situation occurred when John Elway did not want to play for the then-Baltimore Colts, who held the No. 1 pick in the 1983 draft.
The Colts drafted Elway and traded him to the Broncos. He then went on to win two Super Bowls with Denver.
Sanders wouldn’t name a city he wouldn’t want his sons and Hunter to play in, but he agreed with the hosts that the Eagles were a “good fit.”
He also named San Francisco, Dallas, Washington and Baltimore as cities that might approve play. These are all teams he played for during his 14-season career.
“There were a few cities that were a good fit. Atlanta was a good fit,” Sanders said of the Falcons selecting him with the fifth overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft. “And I want that for my kids too. All of them. I want the right fit.”
As for why Atlanta was a good fit for him, Sanders explained that he was attracted to the city’s people.
“First of all, it was ethnicity. It was the first time I saw a black person in a position of authority.” [doctors, lawyers]… It blew my mind … it was real in Atlanta,” he said. “I had never seen anything like it in my life.”
Sanders’ comments came after he said earlier this month that he didn’t want Schedul to play in a city with a cold climate.
“Well, I don’t want children of my own.” [Shedeur] It’s not going to be cold next year,” he said during a recent appearance on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio with Chris Russo. “He grew up in Texas. He played in Jackson and in Colorado. In Colorado, the season ended before it got cold. He’s just thinking far ahead. I tell him that. I don’t want it.”
Sheduar and Hunter transferred from Jackson State to Colorado after Sanders became the Buffaloes’ head coach in December 2022.
The quarterback threw for 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns, and three interceptions in his first season in Boulder.
Hunter was a starter on both sides of the ball in 2023, catching 57 passes for 721 yards and five touchdowns.
He also recorded three interceptions and 30 total tackles.
Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III said he wasn’t surprised by Sanders’ comments.
“Everyone needs to fasten their seatbelts because the power shift is coming.” griffin said He recently appeared on ESPN’s “Get Up” and explained how former USC quarterback Caleb Williams showed up to the 2024 NFL Combine but did not participate. “…players now understand that they don’t have to debrief…because without them, all these sports leagues are nothing. This is a time to empower players. I can see that coming to the NFL.”
