Sheikh Hasina’s Major Accusation of “Militancy” Against Mohammed Yunus

Accusations Against Interim Government Chief by Sheikh Hasina

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has criticized Muhammad Yunus, the interim chief of South Asia’s government, accusing him of “selling the country to the United States.” Hasina also denounced the ban on the Awami League parties, labeling it unconstitutional. In an audio message shared on her party’s Facebook page, she asserted that Yunus took control of the Bangladeshi government with the assistance of extremist groups.

Yunus, a Nobel laureate, was appointed as the interim leader on August 7, 2024, shortly after the previous general was compelled to resign due to protests led by students against the government. Hasina’s comments surfaced amid reports suggesting that Yunus might resign following the military’s announcement for general elections scheduled in December.

Hasina claimed that Yunus, who received global attention during her administration, handed over governance to those her government had actively combated. She reflected on her father’s resistance against U.S. demands on St. Martin Island, stating, “He had to give his life to do so, and that was my destiny.”

She recounted the struggle for Bangladesh’s independence alongside her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, emphasizing that it was never anyone’s intention to surrender the country’s sovereignty. “Power?” she questioned, expressing dismay at the current situation.

Reiterating her allegations, Hasina accused Yunus of collaborating with extremist factions. “He seized power with support from terrorists who have been banned in various international regions, while my government worked to protect the Bangladeshi people. After just one terrorist attack, we implemented strict measures and arrested numerous individuals,” she stated.

Labeling Yunus as “a militant leader,” she condemned the government for its actions against the Awami League, terming it illegal and unconstitutional. “Our great Bengali constitution was earned through a prolonged struggle and liberation war. Who granted this extremist leader the authority to infringe upon the constitution?” she added.
