Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is up for a vote on expulsion after declining to step down.

Florida Representative Sheila Charfilas McCormick may be nearing a rough patch as Republicans get ready for a vote on her expulsion, which could happen as soon as Tuesday.

The House Ethics Committee is set to meet Tuesday afternoon to recommend disciplinary measures against her, although Representative Greg Steube, a Republican from Florida, has pledged to push for the expulsion vote regardless of what actions the committee suggests.

Even with the threat of expulsion hanging over her, Charfilas McCormick has stood firm against resigning. “For those asking if I’m going to resign, the answer is no,” she told Fox News Digital recently. “This is not the time to abandon the district, nor for them to stop fighting for their future.”

If the expulsion passes, she would become the first member to be expelled from the House since former Representative George Santos in 2023. Historically, only six members have experienced expulsion from the House.

Charfilas McCormick has been convicted of over 20 ethics violations, including financial misconduct, in a rare House ethics trial this past March. She insists on her innocence and is facing another criminal trial following her indictment by a federal grand jury in 2025.

The ethics verdict was linked to allegations that she redirected more than $5 million in disaster relief funds to her campaign, which were improperly funneled into her family’s healthcare business. Notably, she declined to repay the excess amount, which vastly exceeded what the government owed her family’s company.

Steube’s resolution would require bipartisan support since expelling a lawmaker necessitates a two-thirds majority. Former Representatives Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzalez, dealing with sexual misconduct allegations, recently chose to resign to escape the threat of expulsion. Additionally, Representative Cory Mills from Florida is also facing a potential expulsion vote.

While some Democrats, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have indicated they would vote for Charfilas McCormick’s expulsion if she doesn’t resign, many other party members remain quiet on the issue. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries mentioned that the Democrats will convene after the Ethics Committee wraps up its recommendations to discuss her case.

The Congressional Black Caucus has also been relatively muted about the allegations against Charfilas McCormick, despite having contributed $5,000 to her campaign in early 2026.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has expressed his support for removing her, citing “alarming facts” noted by the bipartisan ethics committee.

In terms of finances, Charfilas McCormick appears to be struggling. Recent Federal Election Commission filings show that she has only $11,000 in her campaign account, while facing nearly $4.4 million in debt, partly due to her legal expenses. A growing number of Democratic challengers are eyeing her seat, including activist Elijah Manley, rapper Luther Campbell, and former Broward County Mayor Dale Holness.

Charfilas McCormick is also up against 15 additional criminal charges, which could lead to over 50 years in prison if she’s convicted. These charges include allegations of misappropriating FEMA funds and involvement in a scheme to disguise fraudulent donations to her campaign.

A federal judge recently agreed to delay proceedings until February 2027, following requests from both her defense team and the prosecution.
