Sheinelle Jones Discusses Challenges of Returning to Work After Husband’s Passing

Sheinelle Jones described her return to the “Today” show as “tough,” coming four months after the loss of her husband, Uuche Ogier, due to cancer.

During her appearance on the show, she opened up about her experience, mentioning her three children: Kane, 16, and 13-year-old twins, Clara and Ushu. She reflected on how they were adapting to new routines together.

“It’s a lot to manage, but we’re getting through the first week of school and me going back to work,” she said, noting her return earlier this month felt somewhat enjoyable.

However, Jones also shared that the transition wasn’t easy. “When we got home on Friday, it was challenging. We felt a bit lost without him,” she admitted.

She expressed that Saturdays were especially hard, as that was a time when she and Ogier would often reflect on their week together. “It’s like, ‘Oh, this is life,’ and it’s not easy,” she added, hinting at the overwhelming emotions she faced.

The first week back was a stark reminder of her new reality. “Honestly, it felt like a new normal, and it was tough,” she noted.

Earlier this month, Jones had shared in a pre-recorded interview that her “heart still hurts” from Ogier’s passing. Before his death, she had taken a leave from the show to focus on family matters without revealing the nature of her husband’s illness.

In May, “Today” host Savannah Guthrie announced Ogier had died after battling an aggressive brain tumor known as glioblastoma. Guthrie expressed deep sympathy for Jones and her children, stating, “Ushu was an incredible person, and we all loved him.”

Following her return to work in September, Jones thanked her fans for their love and support, explaining that she had kept Ogier’s cancer diagnosis private, as he was a very private person.

Jones and Ogier had been married since September 2007, and navigating life without him remains a challenge for her and their children.
