A video documented the dramatic scene early Saturday morning when the Sheraton Crossroads Hotel in New Jersey was brought down in a controlled demolition, marking the end of a significant chapter for the landmark.
Numerous spectators gathered along the Mahwah highway, eager to watch the 22-story glass and steel building tumble, situated on the border between New Jersey and New York.
The demolition occurred just before 7:30 a.m., producing thunderous sounds that resonated in various parts of New Jersey. Many residents in areas like Midland Park, Montebello, and Wyckoff reported hearing the explosion distinctly.
The structure fell a mere 15 seconds after the blast, which elicited cheers from the crowd, as seen in the footage.
Opened in October 1987, the Sheraton Crossroads was once a favored hotel and wedding venue, known for its stunning glass exterior and scenic mountain vistas.
The hotel had closed permanently in December 2023, with developers initially proposing to construct two warehouses at the site. However, reports indicate the owner is now exploring alternative possibilities.
Many onlookers were there to capture the moment, coordinating with several agencies, including the State Department, to ensure a safe viewing experience.
“It was wild,” remarked Sarah Warren from West Milford shortly after witnessing the event.
“It’s surreal that it’s all gone. I’ve been driving by it for years,” she added.
“It’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen,” exclaimed another spectator, Nick Morales.
