Sheriff in Florida responds to Lizzo's accusation of threatening peaceful protesters: 'Her opinion means nothing to me'

Florida Sheriff Responds to Lizzo’s Claims

A Florida Sheriff recently made a statement after singer Lizzo—whose real name is Melissa Vivian Jefferson—accused law enforcement of threatening to kill peaceful protesters. This accusation, posted on social media, drew significant attention.

Lizzo expressed her dismay at what she viewed as an infringement on constitutional rights, particularly freedom of speech in the U.S. She stated, “I had never heard of her until early tonight,” perhaps reflecting on the unexpected interaction.

In a video that went viral, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivy warned that if you “spit on us, you go to the hospital, then to prison,” and further commented on using force against those who threaten officers during protests. His remarks included a harsh ultimatum regarding deadly force at protests.

Despite the tensions, Ivy clarified that his warnings were aimed specifically at violent protesters, insisting that peaceful protest is a fundamental part of democracy. “My warnings were directed at violent protesters,” he concluded.

After Lizzo’s statement, Ivy aimed to correct what he perceived as a misinterpretation of his comments, admitting he wasn’t familiar with her music until now. “She clearly didn’t hear what was actually said at the press conference,” Ivy remarked.

With nearly 75,000 likes on her Instagram post, Lizzo urged everyone to reclaim their constitutional rights and promised support for one another in standing up against officials behaving unlawfully.

The controversy follows a series of protests across the country, where a small percentage of the population took part but also led to instances of reported violence.

In a separate context, Lizzo has also faced backlash from fat-positive activists, who felt betrayed after she requested more acceptance for larger body types while simultaneously advocating for weight loss.
