Florida Sheriff Raises Concerns Over Federal Immigration Capacity

Florida’s Polk County Sheriff, Grady Judd, has issued warnings about the impending limitations of federal capabilities as more law enforcement personnel gain immigration authority to detain undocumented individuals.

During a meeting of the state Immigration Executive Committee, Judd explained that individuals may be kept in county jail for up to 48 hours as the local facilities handle illegal immigration cases. However, beyond two days, he mentioned that national detention standards could become problematic, leaving state officials at an impasse.

He stated, “If you push the limits, there’s no way that anyone can manage this situation effectively.” Judd emphasized the need for a waiver to meet Florida’s prison standards for detaining individuals, underscoring that people are presumed innocent until proven guilty—and that the same should apply to those who are in the country unlawfully.

Efforts have been made to increase the capacity for detaining immigrants, including the initiative known as Everglades Wannial Cutraz, although Judd described this as merely a “drop in the bucket.”

Judd continued, likening the current circumstances to driving at a steady speed but warned that if authorities push harder, the system won’t sustain itself. He expressed that local police are now authorized to arrest undocumented individuals during regular patrols.

Florida law mandates local law enforcement’s participation in the 287(g) program, with both the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Capitol Police newly included. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security has received significant funding to support mass deportations, which could alleviate the existing shortages in detention space.
