Sheriff in Louisiana Steps Down Following Assault on Podcaster Who Spoke Against Him

Resignation of Louisiana Sheriff After Assault Incident

A sheriff in Louisiana has unexpectedly stepped down after admitting guilt in a drunken attack at a steakhouse that resulted in a podcaster being hospitalized. The sheriff, who was 61 years old, confessed to choking, hitting, and threatening to kill Robert Couvillion, a local podcaster known for his critical views on the sheriff’s office, during a confrontation captured on security footage in late May.

Randall Smith, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff, tendered his resignation on Wednesday following his guilty plea to charges of second-degree battery and disturbing the peace due to public intoxication. Couvillion had been a vocal critic of Smith during his podcast on the Louisiana Radio Network.

The district attorney, Colin Sims, remarked that the resignation was part of a plea bargain, and Smith would be on probation for just over a year. The prosecutor’s office indicated that this immediate resignation would enable the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, which employs over 800 personnel, to proceed with their duties in safeguarding the public more effectively.

Reports from WWL Radio detailed how, on his birthday, Couvillion was celebrating with his wife at a steakhouse when Smith attacked him. Couvillion recalled being strangled from behind shortly after arriving at the restaurant. He expressed that this violent encounter likely stemmed from his ongoing critiques of the sheriff’s office.

Interestingly, Smith’s bar tab revealed charges for 18 drinks that night.

After his resignation, Smith issued a statement expressing regret to the residents of St. Tammany Parish, his colleagues at the sheriff’s office, the steakhouse staff, and his family, particularly his wife, Adele. He acknowledged that, as an elected official, he was subjected to public scrutiny, and while he recognized that it came with the territory, he emphasized the distress it had caused his family.

Smith mentioned that he had endured numerous personal attacks over the past decade but found it increasingly difficult to overlook the emotional toll it took on his wife due to public harassment and unfounded accusations. He concluded his statement by thanking those who supported him through this challenging period, reaffirming his commitment to address his actions through legal channels.

Witnesses reported that Smith threw Couvillion to the ground, delivering punches and kicks, and shouted threats, including intentions to kill him. Couvillion suffered a concussion and two dislocated teeth, receiving treatment at a hospital afterward.

Despite the relatively light consequences for the assault, Sims noted that he aimed to treat Smith like any other citizen facing similar charges. Couvillion commented on the situation, expressing relief that justice was served rather than being overlooked due to Smith’s position.

St. Tammany Parish is situated near New Orleans.
