Traffic Stop Uncovers Illegal Immigrants Hidden in Hay Bale
During a routine traffic stop on Tuesday, a deputy in Texas stumbled upon a shocking discovery: 12 illegal immigrants crammed inside a hay bale, suspected to be part of a human smuggling operation.
The deputy pulled over a white Ford F-250, which was towing a large trailer filled with hay, near Flatnier along IH-10, just before 1 PM. According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, an inspection revealed the hidden individuals.
Upon investigating the round hay bale more closely, the officer was taken aback to find the 12 people concealed inside.
Smugglers were apparently using hidden compartments crafted within the hay to evade detection, boasting that their methods were well-designed to throw off authorities.
As Sheriff Korenek noted, these small compartments were ingeniously concealed, yet extremely perilous for those trapped within them. “This method is not just deceptive; it’s incredibly dangerous to human life,” he remarked.
The driver of the F-250 was identified as 44-year-old Delbert Flanders from Kansas. He was arrested on state and federal charges related to smuggling and taken to a local hospital for unspecified reasons.
No specific details about his treatment were provided by a spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Office.
Additionally, two other suspects were apprehended, referred to as “option coordinators.” They were Adanairo Lambert, 22, and 25-year-old Reece Delgado Fernandez, both charged with similar state and federal smuggling offenses.
“Smugglers continue to use increasingly dangerous and creative methods to transport individuals across Texas highways,” Korenek pointed out.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that the 12 undocumented individuals discovered in the hay bale have been turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for processing.
The operation involved collaboration among deputies from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Flatnier Police Department, and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, highlighting a cohesive effort to tackle such illegal activities.
