Sheriff Judd speaks out against unruly boaters following a violent fight at Lake Winterset

Brawl at Winterset Lake Draws Sheriff’s Criticism

A chaotic confrontation erupted at Winterset Lake in Florida, and it was all captured on video. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, who is often known for his stern words and tough stance, expressed his disapproval after witnessing the brawl. The footage shows various individuals engaging in a physical fight, with one man throwing punches at another, while onlookers, including a young girl on a boat, watched the disarray unfold.

Judd pointed out that this kind of unruly behavior has become a recurring problem in the area. Despite multiple warnings in the past, he plans to intensify law enforcement efforts to tackle these disturbances. “If you’re intent on engaging in violence that can lead to severe injuries, you need to do it without bothering your neighbors,” he conveyed in a press conference.

He further condemned the actions, stating that when warnings are ignored, people unleash chaos. Eight individuals were arrested, mostly in their late teens or early twenties, with 40-year-old Richard Carden being the exception. The others included Mason Rand, Nate Rand, Payton Ely, Timothy Gooding, Garrett Ole, Garrett Hiltvidell, and an unidentified 17-year-old.

All arrested individuals face charges related to rioting, disorderly conduct, and trespassing, according to the sheriff’s office. Judd revealed that those involved were part of two factions that were previously friends and had a history of altercations, including one incident at a nearby bar earlier this year. This history makes it somewhat complicated as there are concerns about evidence tampering as some have already faced charges.

The altercation escalated from shouting to physical confrontation, spilling both into the water and onto land. Judd stressed that this kind of behavior regularly violates local trespassing laws, despite clear signage indicating private property boundaries.

He elaborated that the ongoing disturbances have made it necessary to reevaluate noise ordinances, particularly concerning boats on the lake, in hopes of curbing such incidents in the future.
