The Pima County Sheriff’s Department recently updated Sheriff Chris Nanos’ official resume, following local news reports highlighting inaccuracies related to his work history. These discrepancies notably touched on his departure from his first law enforcement job.
Public records indicate that Nanos resigned from the El Paso, Texas, Police Department in 1982 to avoid being terminated, while his resume stated he was still employed there until 1984 before becoming a correctional officer in Pima County.
Additionally, a spokesperson for the department confirmed that two clerical errors were found in Nanos’ publicly available resume, emphasizing that these inaccuracies were administrative rather than misleading. Nonetheless, they did not address the reports suggesting he left El Paso to evade termination.
According to the spokesperson, Nanos actually served in the El Paso Police Department from 1976 until 1982, confirming that his tenure ended earlier than previously indicated. They also clarified that he was promoted to captain in 2007, not in 2009 as stated.
The reports also detailed Nanos’ controversial track record, mentioning that he faced suspension several times for various allegations, including excessive force and missing shifts. In one notable incident, he was suspended for 15 days after allegedly kicking a robbery suspect in the head during an arrest.
Meanwhile, Nanos is currently overseeing the investigation of the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of TV host Savannah Guthrie. She has been missing since February 1, 2026, and Nanos has expressed frustration regarding the initial handling of the case, as well as conflicting statements made during the investigation. Despite this, no suspects or persons of interest have been publicly named so far, nearly six weeks post-disappearance.
Authorities are currently offering rewards exceeding $1.2 million for any information that could lead to her recovery. Those with information are encouraged to contact law enforcement.
