Suspect Dies After Fatal Shooting of Detective
A suspect involved in the deadly shooting of a sheriff’s detective in California has also lost his life during a standoff. The sheriff openly shared details about the incident during a press conference.
“We ran him over on purpose. If you shoot a police officer, we make sure to respond,” said Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreau. He further stated, “He got run over. He got what he deserved.”
“This situation escalated quickly from a civil eviction to the tragic loss of a police officer’s life. It’s senseless,” Boudreau added.
The sheriff described the suspect, identified as 59-year-old David Morales, as wearing camouflage and lying on the ground, still posing a threat during the incident. “The situation is resolved, and he has died,” Boudreau stated later.
As reported by KSEE, an armored vehicle operated by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office was responsible for striking Morales, leading to his death. “He wasn’t shot,” Boudreau clarified. “One of the BearCats ran him over.”
The events unfolded when authorities arrived at a residence in Porterville around 10:20 a.m. to execute an eviction order. This led to gunfire directed at the deputies, according to the same source. Witnesses reportedly captured a brief video that shows multiple gunshots, with officers taking cover behind cars.
Morales had not been keeping up with his rent, prompting the eviction notice. Sheriff Boudreau mentioned that this sort of reaction isn’t normal, highlighting how the situation spiraled out of control.
Sadly, the detective who was shot, 35-year-old Randy Hoppert, was a father and had a pregnant wife. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after being shot in the head and was pronounced dead at Sierra View Medical Center at 11:57 a.m.
The incident left the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office reeling, with Boudreau expressing shock and sorrow over the tragic circumstances, urging the community to keep the detective’s family in their thoughts.
