Sherman family in Texas anticipating their first baby girl in 108 years

A Texas family recently celebrated the arrival of their first baby girl in over a century. This milestone is particularly significant as the Shermans have welcomed boys for the last 108 years. The exciting news was shared during a surprise gender reveal party.

Michael Sherman Jr. and his wife, Jockeya, revealed to family and friends that they are expecting a daughter. Jockeya expressed her shock, saying, “I didn’t even think there would be a girl, so I was very surprised because we knew if we had another child it would be a boy.”

Michael, a member of the Montgomery County Fire Department, was caught off guard by the surprise party, which included family from all over and even camera crews. He recalled, “I was off my shift that morning, and it was just supposed to be a small reveal. I came in blindfolded, and there were cameras and family everywhere. It was pretty surprising.”

When he learned about his family’s long-standing streak of boys coming to an end, he was met with enthusiastic cheers from loved ones. Their young son, Mekai, was part of the celebration with a cake adorned with a pink ribbon, symbolizing the upcoming addition.

The last girl born into the Sherman family was Ora Bell Sherman in 1917, who was an influential figure in the civil rights movement.

Michael Sr., the father of the expecting dad, remarked on the importance of this change, saying, “It’s monumental. I have three boys; my dad had two boys. It was always boys.”

Even though the baby girl isn’t due until March, she is already well-received by her family.

Great-grandmother Lydia Robertson expressed her hopes for the new arrival, saying, “I love her. No matter what path she chooses, we’ll be with her. I pray she makes the right decisions in life.”

Mekai, excited to meet his sister, seems eager to take on the role of a big brother. “I think he’s going to be a great brother and leader. He’s definitely looking forward to seeing his new sister,” said Michael Jr.
