Sherri Papini’s Story and Lie Detector Test Explored in New Documentary
Sherri Papini, who gained nationwide attention for her mysterious disappearance in 2016, is revisiting her past through a recent lie detector test conducted for the documentary “Sherri Papini: Caught in a Lie,” aired on Investigation Discovery. In 2022, Papini was sentenced to 18 months in prison for faking her kidnapping, which had sparked a massive, multi-state search.
Now 42 years old, Papini reflects on her actions and feelings of regret. During the documentary, she appears to emphasize her victimization during her alleged abduction, claiming she was “tortured” while she was missing. Despite some initial reluctance, Papini felt compelled to participate in the lie detector test to share her narrative.
“She didn’t really want to do either of those, but I think she recognized this as her opportunity to tell her story,” said Nicole Rittenmeyer, the director of the documentary.
To ensure her emotional safety during the filming, Rittenmeyer noted the presence of a therapist and set up safe words for Papini if things became too overwhelming.
The lie detector test, administered by Brett Bartlett, a former law enforcement officer, sought to validate Papini’s claims, including her assertion that she did not voluntarily leave with her ex-boyfriend, James Reyes. However, contradictions arose during the test, as Bartlett flagged some inconsistencies in her responses.
Interestingly, Papini mentioned having a plan with Reyes to meet, yet when asked about her intended travel, she denied it. “Your body is telling me otherwise,” Bartlett pointed out. This kind of incongruence adds a layer of confusion to Papini’s narrative.
Revisiting her past, Papini reveals details about her emotional state at the time, including feelings of unhappiness in her marriage and a complicated relationship with Reyes. She has made claims that some of the actions taken while she was missing were not her doing—insisting that it wasn’t her intention to harm herself to further the story she perpetuated.
While Papini asserts that her story has been misunderstood, authorities uncovered evidence revealing that she had stayed with Reyes during her disappearance, prompting significant criticism and skepticism regarding her previously reported narrative of abduction.
In the wake of the scandal, her husband, Keith Papini, filed for divorce, and Sherri expressed profound shame for the turmoil her actions caused. She stated in court, “I am deeply ashamed of myself for my actions,” acknowledging the harm she inflicted on her family and friends.
The documentary aims to peel back the layers of Papini’s story while also addressing the psychological aspects influencing her behavior, featuring discussions on personality disorders that might explain her actions.
As viewers await the documentary’s premiere on May 26 and 27, Papini’s tumultuous journey of deception and regret continues to unfold, raising questions about truth, accountability, and the human experience.
