Sherrill takes victory in New Jersey's governor election

Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) has emerged victorious over former Congressman Jack Ciatarelli (Republican) in the New Jersey gubernatorial race, marking a significant success for the Democratic Party in this electoral cycle, the first since President Trump’s second term began.

Sherrill, who has served four terms representing a northern New Jersey district, faced a tough contest from Ciatarelli, who was vying for the governorship for the third time after narrowly losing to Governor Phil Murphy (Democratic) in 2021. With Murphy facing term limits, he couldn’t run again.

The competition intensified in recent weeks, with some polls suggesting a close race as both candidates navigated challenging national political landscapes.

Historically, New Jersey hasn’t elected a governor from the same party for three consecutive terms since 1961. Democratic leaders were worried about voter frustration over an affordability crisis, especially while they held both the governor’s office and the state Legislature.

On the Republican side, they faced the challenge of Trump’s low approval ratings in the state, even though they had made gains in earlier elections. Murphy had narrowly won the state four years back, and Vice President Harris won by just six points against Trump last year. A recent Emerson College Poll indicated that Trump’s disapproval rating in New Jersey stands at 51%. This unpopularity placed Ciatarelli in a tricky position—he needed to distance himself from Trump while still trying to appeal to his supporters.

The Democrats aimed to frame the election as a referendum on Trump and his administration, tying Ciatarelli closely to the president. Conversely, Republicans wanted to focus attention on the consequences of continued Democratic rule in New Jersey.

As the campaign progressed, personal attacks escalated between the candidates. Ciatarelli criticized Sherrill for skipping his 1994 Naval Academy graduation, alleging a connection to a past cheating scandal, which Sherrill defended by stating he didn’t report classmates involved. Ciatarelli then urged Sherrill to disclose his military disciplinary records.

On the other hand, Sherrill retaliated against Ciatarelli after his supporters acquired a largely unredacted version of her military records, which contained sensitive personal information. Ciatarelli denied any wrongdoing, and the National Archives acknowledged responsibility for the breach.

Sherrill went further, accusing Ciatarelli and his medical publishing company of being linked to the opioid crisis, a claim that Ciatarelli firmly rejected.

New Jersey’s race was one of two notably contested gubernatorial elections held on that Tuesday. In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger is challenging Republican Winsome Earl Sears to succeed term-limited Governor Glenn Youngkin.
