Sherrill Under Scrutiny Regarding Her Children's Naval Academy Admissions

Mikie Sherrill Faces Scrutiny in Gubernatorial Race

Representative Mikie Sherrill, a Democratic candidate for governor in New Jersey, is under the spotlight after it was revealed that two of her children, Lincoln and Margaret Hedberg, gained admission to the US Naval Academy. This news, initially announced in June, coincides with reports about Sherrill’s involvement in a fraud scandal from 1994.

On Tuesday, Sherrill’s campaign felt the heat from this latest development. The siblings were among only nine students who received nominations in their district, which is quite competitive. While each member of Congress can nominate up to 15 candidates for each open seat at the Academy, generally, only five nominations can be pursued at once. Candidates also need to fulfill specific academic, medical, and physical criteria.

Interestingly, the family indicated that their nominations came via Senator Cory Booker and George Helmy of New Jersey, not through Sherrill’s congressional office. Sherrill mentioned she recommended that her children apply this way to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest. However, it’s not clear whether Booker or Helmy considered any applicants as principal candidates.

The emergence of two children from the same family into the Academy has sparked a mix of reactions online, given the difficulty of the admissions process. Sherrill’s campaign director, Sean Higgins, accused her critics, particularly her Republican opponent Jack Ciattarelli, of targeting her family’s involvement. Supporters of Sherrill argue that her daughter’s admission was based on her own hard work, noting that she had previously participated in the Navy Reserve Program.

Meanwhile, Sherrill’s campaign has resisted calls to release her complete Naval Academy disciplinary records. They claim that such disclosure would be illegal and highlight her nearly ten years of service as a naval officer.

However, Sherrill’s past continues to cast a shadow. She was denied the chance to walk in her graduation in 1994 after she declined to testify against a classmate involved in an electrical engineering fraud case. Although she did graduate and later became a naval helicopter pilot, the Academy faced backlash during this period, leading to discipline for many midshipmen and calls for reform to restore integrity within the institution.

Complicating matters further, Sherrill’s husband, Jason Hedberg, was also linked to the 1994 cheating scandal. In a related lawsuit, the Academy’s Honorary Committee sought to prevent disciplinary action tied to the case, arguing that their rights were infringed upon when they had to provide statements to investigators. Although the lawsuit was unsuccessful, Hedberg graduated and later worked as a Navy Intelligence Agent.

As the race for governor heats up, recent polls indicate that Republican support is climbing, narrowing the Democrats’ lead. An Emerson College/PIX11/The Hill survey conducted on September 22-23 shows Sherrill and Ciattarelli virtually tied at 43%, with a notable 11% of voters still undecided. With challenges mounting on various fronts, Sherrill is navigating significant obstacles as the stakes in this election rise, particularly with former President Donald Trump trying to gain traction in a state that has not leaned Republican for the governorship since 2013.
