Former Michigan coach Sherone Moore displayed “strange” behavior before his firing on Wednesday due to allegations of “inappropriate relationships with staff,” as reported by ESPN.
College football analyst Pete Thamel mentioned that concerns had been brewing for some time within the University of Michigan staff.
“There was considerable worry about Sherone Moore’s odd conduct, which included criticizing assistant coaches,” Thamel noted on “SportsCenter” after the announcement of Moore’s termination in his second season.
The situation reportedly escalated recently, with the coach exhibiting what Thamel called “unusual” behavior after an initial investigation had concluded toward the end of the regular season, following their last game on November 29—a loss to Ohio State.
“It’s not common for Michigan State to make such a definitive statement about a firing linked to an inappropriate relationship,” he added.
In a statement from the University of Michigan, they clarified that Moore’s termination meant they would not have to pay him a buyout fee.
CBS highlighted that some key donors had expressed their dissatisfaction with the program, although there was no indication of when this shift in support took place.
Moore’s record stood at 18-8 over his two seasons at the helm, including a 9-3 record this year, and he had one win while substituting for Jim Harbaugh in the 2023 season.
The University articulated that “UM head football coach Sherone Moore has been terminated for cause, effective immediately.” They further noted, “The investigation revealed credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship, which violates University policy.”
Shortly after his dismissal, Moore was taken into custody by local police.
The Saline Police Department reported that they arrested the 39-year-old before passing him to Pittsfield Township Police for further investigation of potential charges.
According to the Pittsfield Police, they are looking into an assault incident and have taken a suspect into custody.
Moore is currently detained at the Washtenaw County Jail, pending review of charges, as the investigation remains ongoing.
The Pittsfield Police noted that the situation seems to be non-random and poses no ongoing threat to the community.
Moore, along with his wife Kelly, has three kids: Shiloh, Solei, and Sadie.
The couple tied the knot in 2015, having gotten engaged a year earlier. Moore frequently acknowledged his wife on social media, expressing gratitude and love for her.
