Sheryl Lee Ralph, known for her role in “Abbott Elementary,” remarked that the show is the “only real comedy” nominated at the 2026 Emmys.
During an interview at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday, Ralph made her comment about the show’s nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series in a somewhat pointed manner.
“Abbott Elementary, top of the conversation — nominated for best cast,” Ralph stated in her conversation with E! News.
She emphasized, “I’m looking forward to a win since we’re the only real comedy in the category.” When reporter Justin Sylvester acknowledged her statement, Ralph confidently replied, “Yeah you did!”
The series competes for Outstanding Comedy Series alongside “The Bear,” “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” “Hacks,” “Widow’s Bay,” “Nobody Wants This,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “Shrinking.”
In her role, Ralph portrays kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard. “Abbott Elementary” has received critical acclaim and has been nominated for the Outstanding Comedy Series category every year since its premiere in 2021, though it has yet to win. Ralph did not receive a nomination this year for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, having previously won that award in 2022.
The show is contending for seven awards at this year’s ceremony, including nominations for creator and showrunner Quinta Brunson for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
Additionally, actress Jannelle James is nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, while actor Tyler James Williams is up for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series.
Earlier this month, Brunson commented on how “Abbott Elementary” stands out in the current television landscape as it prepares for its sixth season. She mentioned that the show is thriving in a space where many network shows have struggled, gaining attention on platforms like TikTok and Instagram as it airs.
