A British teenager has been sentenced to two years in prison for killing an elderly man with a single punch, CCTV footage shows.
Omar Mumesh was 16 when he punched 82-year-old Dennis Clark in May 2021 at Derby bus station, about 130 miles outside Manchester.
Clark suffered a skull fracture and a brain bleed, and died nine days later in hospital.
Now 18, he was found guilty of manslaughter in July and sentenced to two years in juvenile detention on Friday.
While at Eagle Market in Derby, Clark stopped and spoke to a group of teenagers who were playing on top of an escalator and blocking it. CCTV footage released by Derbyshire Police.
The veteran, who had served in Singapore, then left the supermarket and headed to a bus stop at around 4.30pm, but was followed by a group of three teenagers.
Teenagers were seen surrounding him and Mumesh shoved the old man. Then Clark pushed him back.
A few seconds later, Clark was seen falling to the ground, hitting his head and losing consciousness, police said.
Mumusu fled the station and was quickly arrested.
During the week-long trial, Mumesh’s defense argued that the boy “acted in self-defense.”
Derbyshire Police said the other two boys were not charged.
Clark’s family said they were left with a “feeling of emptiness” after his death. According to the Mirror.
Mr Clarke’s nephew Ricky Davey said in a victim impact statement that the veteran served in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was a fisherman in his spare time.
He also loved to dance, “doted on his family,” was a devout Christian, and was a member of his church choir.
“It will take many years to come to terms with the shocking death,” Ms Davey said.
“His death left a huge hole in the lives of our entire family and left us with a feeling of emptiness.”
